Maria Callas (1923-1977) was the most celebrated and influential Opera singer of the 20th Century. Born in New York to Greek parents, she received her musical education in Greece and established her fame in Italy.
Praised for her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic interpretations, her repertoire ranged from classical opera to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini and further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and even Wagner.
She graced the stage all over the world and her combination of musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina and she is still considered today as the definition of the artistic Diva.
